Fara Lodhéřov
Welcome to the website for the rectory renovation project in Lodhéřov in south Bohemia. You are looking at an image created by artificial intelligence; this is how the rectory will look like in a few years, once the extensive renovation is complete. For decades, it lay dormant like Sleeping Beauty, waiting for us to wake it from its long slumber and breathe new life into it.
As a native of Jindřichův Hradec, a beautiful medieval town close by, I could no longer bear to watch it fall into ruin. I first saw the rectory in 2020 while I was working on a similar project nearby. It waited for me for another six long years until June 2026. I decided to buy and restore it. I am dedicating all my time, energy, expertise, and—not least—my money to this magnificent listed building.
The rectory was built between 1724 and 1730. Minor alterations were made in 1827, but no repairs have taken place since then. While this spared the building from the insensitive, amateurish interventions and remodeling of the Communist era, it also meant the structure had reached a critical state—it was truly a case of "five minutes to midnight."
The property features magnificent stucco ornaments, including coved ceilings and stucco ceiling panels in almost every room, period tiled stoves, and two wall paintings from the first half of the 18th century in the upstairs drawing room. This Baroque rectory is a significant architectural feature; together with the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul and the two statues—St. John of Nepomuk and St. Thaddeus—standing at the entrance, it forms a key visual landmark for the village.
Visitors to the rectory and the entire complex can tour the building while it is undergoing renovation, learning not only about the process of restoring heritage sites but also about the history of the village—which is documented as far back as 1292. The first written record of the village dates to 1294, when it was the property of Oldřich II of Hradec, Lord of Jindřichův Hradec and Telč. You can learn more about the village and its eventful history during the tour. Please, step inside...

Preserving cultural heritage for future generations
There are likely many people who might ask why one would bother renovating such a ruin at all. Why not simply tear it down and build a new structure—a bungalow meeting the highest standards for thermal insulation and zero-emission living? Yet, our renovation is about more than just repairs.
We know that every wall and every piece of timber holds a story—one we wish to preserve and pass on to future generations. This heritage site will not merely be restored; it will be breathed new life into as a place where people can connect with history, gather together, and marvel at what can be achieved through human perseverance, craftsmanship, and the desire to pass on cultural heritage. In short, this historic site will live again.
The rectory in Lodhéřov has stood here for nearly 300 years. And thanks to enthusiasts—lovers of history and heritage like us, who dedicate almost everything to these historic structures—it will stand for centuries to come. Let us cherish the beautiful monuments left to us by our ancestors—in the case of South Bohemia, the Lords of Hradec and the Rosenbergs. Without them, we would not have this magnificent region—a land that is, without exaggeration, like something out of a fairy tale.
